Case Study

Overview
The Mariposa Hotel faced persistent issues with limescale accumulation in their rooftop misting system, which is critical for cooling the terrace during the hot summer months. This build-up, caused by high levels of calcium carbonate in the water supply, led to frequent blockages in the misting nozzles. As a result, the hotelās maintenance team had to clean or replace components every one to two weeks, significantly increasing labour costs and system downtime.
Key Issues
Limescale formation in misting systems is a common issue in areas with hard water. As misting systems atomise water into fine droplets, any dissolved minerals, particularly calcium and magnesium, can solidify when the water evaporates, leaving deposits behind. Over time, this results in:
- Clogged nozzles, reducing mist output and system efficiency
- Increased maintenance needs, requiring frequent descaling or replacement of nozzles
- Uneven cooling performance, affecting guest comfort
- Shortened equipment lifespan, as mineral deposits cause long-term damage to pipes and fittings
The Mariposa Hotel needed a long-term solution that would prevent limescale formation and ensure consistent, hassle-free operation of their misting system.

Our Solution
To tackle the problem, the hotel installed the Integroā¢ water restructuring system. This innovative technology alters the properties of water without the use of chemicals, preventing calcium carbonate from crystallising and adhering to surfaces. By injecting electrons into the water, the Integroā¢ system disrupts the bonding process of minerals, keeping them suspended in a neutral form rather than forming hard deposits.
Summary & ResultsĀ
Since installing the Integroā¢ system, the Mariposa Hotel has gone through two full summer seasons without the need for any maintenance on their misting system. The elimination of limescale build-up has delivered several key benefits:
- No clogged nozzles ā consistent, uninterrupted cooling performance
- No maintenance required ā reduced labour costs and operational downtime
- Extended equipment lifespan ā no mineral-related wear and tear
- Improved guest experience ā ensuring a comfortable, cool rooftop terrace
Conclusion
The Integroā¢ system has proven to be an effective, chemical-free solution for preventing limescale in misting and water systems. Its application at the Mariposa Hotel demonstrates how hotels and businesses can maintain equipment efficiency, reduce maintenance costs, and improve overall guest satisfaction.
By eliminating the issue of limescale before it can form, the Integroā¢ system offers a sustainable, long-term approach to water treatmentākeeping cooling systems running smoothly, even in hard water areas.
Environmental Benefits & Energy Saving
Ā
In addition to the considerable economic savings and other advantages detailed above (improved legionella control, easier cleaning of equipment, etc.), this hotel will achieve the following environmental benefits:

- Extending the life of equipment connected to the water system, such as pumps, heaters and heat exchangers, and improving the efficiency of heating and cooling equipment.
- Reduced equipment breakdowns due to calcification and corrosion, resulting in fewer technician visits and reduced demand for spare parts, which in themselves represent a direct and indirect increase (manufacturing and supply chain) of the hotel's carbon footprint.
- Improved water efficiency.
- Reduced use of detergents and chemicals.
The Carbon Trust in the UK estimates that just 1 mm of lime in heating equipment increases energy consumption by up to 7%, while 6 mm increases consumption by up to 40%. It’s not at all uncommon for heaters and heat exchangers in hard water areas to have at least this amount of buildup, causing a significant increase in utility bills.
