Case Study
Overview
The Thomas Lord by Upham Inns Group is a charming pub near the Hampshire village of Petersfield. It has recently been superbly restored by the Uphams Group offering meals and overnight stays, 7 days a week.
Named after the man who gave his name to Lord’s Cricket Ground, the Thomas Lord is nestled in the picturesque area of West Meon in Hampshire. The pub offers a number of rooms, luxury cabins as well as a lovely outdoor kitchen garden and pizza oven. It is the ideal spot to explore the Meon Valley.
Key Issues
This Hampshire region is renowned for it’s rich clay and chalk deposits which occur naturally in the soil. The abundance of these minerals make ideal conditions for transforming the local soft water to very hard water.
A site survey was conducted, and the following areas were identified as problems upon consultation with the Pub Manager and Area Director for Uphams Group:-
- Problem with shower heads and taps becoming blocked with scale
- Increased energy consumption due to limescale build-up
- Constantly filling up salt in water softeners
- Cleaning of all shower screens and glass in the property
- Limescale and deposit build-up in hot water cylinders and heat exchanger
Ultimately the ongoing build-up of limescale within the property’s water system, needed to be managed, and resolved efficiently and cost effectively.
Our Solution
Initial discussions with Sidon Water began in February 2023. There were a number of potential solutions considered as well as the existing system which was labour intensive to maintain. After two inspections and site visits with The Thomas Lord the decision was made to proceed with Sidon Water’s IntegroTM. Sidon specified two IntegroTM 2 units to be installed:
One on the cold main coming into the building and One on the second cold- water main entering the hotel’s plant room
The installation was smoothly performed by a local plumber known to the company. Over a period of 3 months, full Limescale removal was successfully achieved at the Thomas Lord. Shortly before the trial period commenced, new hot water cylinders were installed in place of old scaled up units. Upon completion of the trial, a thorough inspection revealed no scale accumulation within any of the cylinders.
The heating element of the commercial dishwasher remained free of scale, and the shower heads/taps were completely clear of any scale deposits.
Environmental Benefits
Some of the sustainable and environmentally friendly benefits that installation of the Sidon IntegroTM realises are:
- Improved water quality for all guests
- Improved energy efficiency
- Reduction in repair and replacement costs
- Reduction in equipment failures due to scale and corrosion
- Extended life of all water related equipment
- Lower carbon footprint
- Improved water efficiency
- Housekeeping made easier
Summary & Results
The initial 3 month trial was a huge success. The trial clearly demonstrated that the Sidon IntegroTM system worked extremely well to remove existing limescale, and prevent formation of new deposits through the hot and cold water systems. The system was free from scale ahead of the 3 month schedule and commitment was made by the Uphams Group to roll the technology group wide to their other 14 properties.
What the customer had to say?
“Over the years we have tried numerous technologies to help with our hard water problems, magnets, coils, electric diodes, salt softeners and we were apprehensive of the technology due to previous experiences. We were pleasantly surprised by the Sidon IntegroTM. It performed exactly as promised, quicker than expected and made all our teams working days and conditions easier.”
